COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - Firefighters in College Station responded to a pair of home fires on Monday night.

The first was inside a home on Portsmouth Court near Alexandria Avenue.

The College Station Fire Department said a resident returned home and heard a fire alarm inside activated. Upon entry to the house, firefighters were met with a strong odor of something burning and a light haze inside. After going into the attic, firefighters found evidence that there had been a fire and damage to the attic but it appeared the fire had smothered itself out. An investigation continues into how it started.

The second fire was reported just after 9 p.m. in the 2300 block of San Pedro Drive.

The College Station Fire Department says the tenant of the duplex where the fire started wasn’t at home at the time.

The next-door neighbor was also gone at the time, but the neighbor’s girlfriend was able to respond to the scene and rescued a dog from inside.

The fire department says only heat and smoke affected the next-door duplex, not the fire.

Firefighters will be investigating what may have started the blaze.
